Part A : Introduction to Jurong Lake Park
- Jurong Lake is a freshwater lake and reservoir located in the western region of Singapore formed with the damming of Sungei Jurong further downstream. The lake serves as a reservoir contributing to the water supply of the country. It lies next to the Lakeside MRT Station, which derived its name from this geographical feature. The lake is surrounded by parkland, which serves as a recreational ground for nearby residents in Jurong East and Jurong West New Towns. A landscaped sanctuary called Jurong Lake Park was built around the perimeter of the lake and work was completed in January 2006. Also, a 2.8 kilometre water promenade along Jurong Lake Park would allow residents to participate in watersports and other land activities like fishing and picnicking e.t.c.
- Group reflection:
We went to the lake on 3rd of September to take pictures and some notes on the lake as a class. We were given the rock community as our task that day. Happily, we went to part of the lake which will of course be the rock community. Firstly, we assembled in front of the area plan of Jurong Lake Park then, we were given around 30 minutes to roam around half of the park. On our way to the meeting place (half of the park), we saw not much people there. These people were taking their morning jog while others were just resting on the bench by the side of the lake, enjoying the cool and refreshing breeze. In addition, during the journey, we went near the rock community like the rocks by the lake and pebbles under trees, we saw snails' egg, mimosa, big red ants e.g. Also, after the long distance walk in Jurong Lake Park, we felt that the park is NOT being well-taken care of; the lake is filled with litters from the park users like sweet wrappers, plastic bottles. We could not see any cleaners cleaning the park up in which we think that that decreased the number of park users frequencing the park. Therefore, we think that the JTC did not do a good job in 'tidying' the park up. We also think that the park is full of lives, filling with the variety of animals and plants (biodiversity), just like a rainforest, planted with trees and huge, said others. While some said the park is smelly, disgusting as containing many different types of unknown species to them. The smell in the Jurong Lake Park is very natural, just like the smell of tons of plants being compressed together, in by which where we cannot use a single word to describe.
Part B: Grouping And Naming Organisms
- Following is the pictures we took of 5 plants and animals in Jurong Lake Park and we will also find out the scientific name of each organism, together in giving a brief description of any interesting facts about each organism if possible.
What kind of plant is this? We have seen it but not sure what it is being called. It can be seen that it a round leaves that have few red-white flowers around them.
We are not sure what is this being named too. We think that this type of leaves are used to make somekind of herbs or perfume based on the shape of them.
These? We are not sure what these are, maybe somekind of clams found on the rocks?
The pink colour stuff in the back ground is the snail eggs are being produced by the water snails in the lake. Do you know? The water snails eat a wide range of vegetables for the meals! This type of eggs is being reproduced by a kind of snails called the apple snails where they leave their eggs above waterline!
Part C: Focus Community
- As mentioned, our group is in charge of the rock community. We took pictures in which can be seen in the previous part of the blog. We saw organisms nearby in the rock community. Even though we didn't manage to see too many of the organisms appearing underneath the rock, on the rock but we were still able to capture a few rare shots during the moment when they appeared. We suspect that the reason for the less appearance for the organisms because the condition on the rock or underneath is not suitable for living as the organisms will not have much water for surviving or too much sunlight received.
- The organisms found in the rock community are usually depending on the rock for support to climb up higher to reach out for more sunlight to photosynthesize and the organisms found underneath the rock can depend on the damp, wet and dark land to live and survive with sufficient enough of water and moisture. In addition, the example of such organisms living in the conditions are bird vine, millipede and centipede. Likewise, they are found there because of the physical factors mentioned above.
Part D: Impact Of Man On Jurong Lake Park
- As the park users frequented the park, they will apt to throw litters to both the land and the lake, when they throw the litter like plastic water bottle in which is made of plastic, the material cannot be decompose and is a non-biodegradable, leading to the plastic to stay in the lake forever. As a result, fish might swim inside and suffocate to death maybe as they can be trap in it, causing a great number of fish to die and leading to water pollution. In addition, when the park users throw the litter like glass bottle on the grass, the kids who are bare-footed will hurt themselves when they were playing on the grass, causing physical injuries. Or maybe, the park users will hurt and harm the organisms in Jurong Lake Park by playing with them in a negative way or feed them some wild poisonous food, decreasing the population of that particular animal, as such that the park will not be that lively again. Or else, they can barbeque there, aid-ing to the polluting of the air. Lastly, the human activities the park users have been doing like fishing and somemore, they have over-doing it, causing the population of the fish to decrease and lead them to extinct too where we cannot beautify the environment anymore.
- We heard that the park officials have made conservation efforts however, from our past visits to Jurong Lake Park, we did not see any cleaners or whoever cleaning the park up, leading to the park users to continue to add on and let the amount of litters in the park to increase, polluting the environment. In addition, we also did not see any rubbish bins during our trip to Jurong Lake Park then. Hence, the park officials did a bad job in the conserving of the environment in the park, this should be what they should be improving on, while others are still paasable.
Part E: Conclusion
From all the evidence we have gathered and what we observed during our Jurong Lake Park visits, we can conclude that:
- The drastic increase in avtivities in Jurong Lake Park has disturbed the natural environment and the biodiversity there as there were evidences that the biodiversity in the park has decreased, with hundreds of fish died because of the water pollution caused by the park users and no much organisms showing up maybe due to the land pollution with the users littering and also, the activities have caused the environment of the park to be filled with somekind of deadly atmosphere because of the dead and small number of organisms left.
- In our own opinion, the park has done pratically nothing to spread the message of conservation to the community as we could not see anything events, signs or posters in the park regarding the conservation and on the other hand, we did not see any sweepers sweeping the park, rubbish collector emptying the rubbish bins in the park and not any officers patrolling around the park to ensure no one makes a fool of themselves like littering and harming the organisms e.t.c. to warn the park users on the consequences of the negetaive impact and the importance of the biodiversity and natural environment so as to conserve the environment.
- In addition, we also think that the JTC has done nothing to reduce the negative impacts of the activities at Jurong Lake, as if the park does not belong to them, so unresponsible. We say this because we saw nothing in the park then to reduce the negative impacts. For example, there is not any sign by the lake to tell the park user (dragon boaters, fishers fishing for leisure) that they should lessen the visits into the lake or stop littering for the park land users when they litter or send letters to them warning them to stop increasing the water-sport activities by not frequencing the lake, or stop littering or stop hurting the livings in the park. Such simple, basics they also did not do, they are simply hopeless.
